The Flying Scotsman is returning to Greater Manchester - here's where and when you can see it

The much-loved Flying Scotsman will steam its way into Greater Manchester again this summer, after a year of cancelled and postponed events.

The iconic steam engine will return to the tracks of the East Lancashire Railway in August and September.

The locomotive was supposed to be the star attraction in Bury over the Easter weekend, but that event has had to be postponed.

It will instead be in town on August 29 and 30, and September 3, 4 and 5.

The Flying Scotsman is owned by the National Railway Museum, and was first built in 1923 by LNER to haul passengers between London and Edinburgh.

The bottle-green machine returned to the tracks in 2016 after a lengthy restoration project.

It was the first locomotive to travel at 100 miles per hour and is a favourite with the public and steam enthusiasts alike.

ELR Chairman Mike Kelly commented: "We are truly delighted to play host once again to the most iconic locomotive in history. We were devastated not once but twice when we had to cancel the Scotsman’s return to the ELR because of Covid-19.

"Whilst the railway has been through some challenging times recently due to the coronavirus outbreak it’s great to now have some exciting and positive events to look forward to, allowing us to offer our loyal customers who stood by us a rare chance to ride behind this giant of steam in 2021.

"The ELR really comes alive on weekends like this. It’s such a special occasion for steam enthusiasts and families alike and we look forward to welcoming them all."

Passengers who'd booked tickets for the Easter dates can transfer them to the new dates.

Each ticket will include a reserved seat for a return trip from Bury to Rawtenstall on the heritage railway.

Ticket-holders who had booked the Bury to Heywood journey will receive an upgrade for no extra cost.

General sale tickets will go live on Friday April 9 at www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk.
