The Flagship in Bangor undergoing appraisal over its future, council says

Council officials could step in over the future development of an empty shopping centre in Co Down .

The Flagship in Bangor's Main Street closed its doors at the end of January this year after concerns for the centre following numerous shop closures.

It was once a hive of activity in the town and home to Argos, Dunnes, Iceland, Co-op, Stewart Miller, PoundWorld, Peacocks and a food court with Burger King and Subway.

But weeks before its closure, it was mainly home to a community hub, charity shop and discount sportswear store.

Now it has emerged the Flagship went into administration earlier this year and Ards and North Down Borough Council is working with key partners on an appraisal that will outline potential options for the re-development of the centre.

A spokeswoman for Ards and North Down Borough Council said: "The Flagship Centre in Bangor is privately owned and in administration.

"Ards and North Down Borough Council recognises the importance of the centre in terms of its potential regeneration and economic benefits to the town and the wider Borough.

"As such the Council is working with key partners on an appraisal that will outline potential options for the re-development of the centre. We are seeking to ensure any solutions are integrated with the exciting private sector investment plans for Queen's Parade and the wider Bangor Waterfront Regeneration plans progressing under the Belfast Region City Deal.

"It is anticipated that an update will be brought to Council by the end of September."
