The fixture advantage that gives Leeds United edge over West Brom, Bristol City and promotion rivals

Leeds United opened up a three-point gap in second place on Saturday after beating Bristol City 1-0.

The Whites were the only team in the top seven to win at the weekend, affording them a little bit more breathing space in the race for automatic promotion.

However, with Fulham only one victory behind them, with Brentford and Nottingham Forest only a further point adrift, the battle is very much heating up.

With 13 Championship matches remaining this season, the fixtures for each club in the running for promotion are under close scrutiny, with Marcelo Bielsa and his team appearing to hold a small advantage over their promotion rivals.

Leeds have just one of the current top seven left to play this season, which comes in the shape of Fulham on March 18.

That is, by far, the lowest number, with all of their rivals set to play one another at least three more times.

Brentford and Nottingham Forest will both face three of the top seven before the season is out, which is bound to make for a tense finish.

For West Brom and Bristol City, it's even worse, with four fixtures against their direct competitors, including the pair's clash at Ashton Gate this weekend.

Preston North End, who currently occupy the final play-off place will have their fate in their own hands by facing all of the other top seven sides, minus Leeds United, although four of their five matches are away from home.

Then there's Fulham, Leeds' closest rival, who must face every single one of the top seven, including trips to Elland Road, Ashton Gate and the City Ground.

With Fulham in danger of losing points against teams at the top end of the table, it puts Leeds in the driving seat to make the most of any slip-ups.

Remaining fixtures between the Championship's top seven:

West Brom (4):  Bristol City (H), Preston (H), Brentford (A), Fulham (A)

Leeds United (1):  Fulham (H)

Fulham (6):  Preston (H), Bristol City (A), Brentford (H), Leeds (A), Nottingham Forest (A), West Brom (H)

Brentford (3):  Fulham (A), West Brom (H), Preston (H)

Nottingham Forest (3): Bristol Cty (H), Fulham (H), Preston (A)

Preston (5):  West Brom (A), Fulham (A), Nottingham Forest (H), Brentford (A), Bristol City (A)

Bristol City (4):  West Brom (A), Fulham (H), Nottingham Forest (A), Preston (H)
