The five worst-affected counties by Covid as high incidence rates in kids continues

Monaghan has the highest seven-day incidence of Covid cases in Ireland with the figure currently standing at 513.1.

Donegal (429), Cavan (371.5), Roscommon (297.5) and Longford (288.7) also have high rates, relative to the rest of the country.

The national average stands at 214.1 per 100,000.

This information was provided by the HSPC and it's collated from August 25 until September 7.

The seven-day numbers are reported from for the first week of the month.

In terms of the counties with the lowest seven-day incidence rates, Wexford (116.9), Sligo (129.7), Waterford (133.4), Wicklow (143.2) and Cork (144.8) are recording the best-case numbers.

The full epidemiological situation for the country can be found below.

On Thursday evening, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre reported 1,29 new cases of Covid. 331 people have been hospitalised, of which 54 are in ICU.

The highest incidence rates of Covid-19 in kids were recorded when children were on holidays from schools, a HSE briefing has heard.

There were on average 1,000 cases per week among zero to 18-year-olds before the summer break this year.

However, this figure rose to between 3,500 and 4,000 a week when children were out of school.

Dr Abbey Collins, a HSE public health specialist, said this was a reflection of stringent test and trace protocols and strict mitigation measures implemented across the board in school settings.

She said: "We saw the largest number of children get Covid over January.... over July and August when the children haven't been in school.

"There is an element about stability of life and being in an environment where there is a quite sort of strict, in the nicest possible way, enforcement of the mitigation measures that we are asking our schools. That is having an impact."

Outside of schools, children often only get tested for the virus if a parent or family member has tested positive, Dr Collins said.

In schools, however, proactive testing and tracing is done where any positive case arises.
