Tottenham have had a good record of late for bringing through younger members of their squad, and that has continued this season.
Japhet Tanganga has impressed when called into action, while Malachi Walcott became the latest academy talent to make his first-team debut when he came off the bench against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
However, not everyone to come through the Tottenham ranks gets their chance so early. Indeed, there are a few older than those two no closer to the first-team who you might have forgotten were still on Spurs’ books...
Anthony Georgiou
Back in 2017, Georgiou was making his Spurs debut in a Champions League game at Apoel Nicosia, the third of three subs after Fernando Llorente and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou had already come off the bench.
But nearly three years later, he hasn’t added to that appearance, and has only started five senior games anywhere… with two of those coming in a Cyprus shirt.
After spending the first half of the season on loan at Ipswich, making three starts in the FA Cup and Football League Trophy but finding himself restricted to appearances from the bench in League One, the midfielder was sent to Bolton for the rest of the season. However, injury has restricted him to just a couple of appearances from the bench.
Shilow Tracey
Tracey turned 22 in April but is between a rock and a hard place at Spurs with no sign of a first-team bow and younger players coming through the academy set-up.
The winger, who joined from non-league Ebbsfleet in 2016, replaced Son Heung-min in a pre-season friendly against Girona in 2018 but saw his progress hit a roadblock when he picked up an injury shortly after that game.
He started all three Football League Trophy games this season for Spurs’ under-21s, but hasn’t moved any closer to a first-team appearance. He was loaned to Macclesfield in January, scoring once in seven League Two appearances.
Luke Amos
Spurs sent Jack Clarke on loan to QPR in January, but he isn’t the only one of their players in W12.
Amos, like Tracey, played in that Girona friendly. He then made his Premier League debut on the opening weekend of the season at Newcastle, replacing fellow central midfielder Eric Dier for the final couple of minutes. However, thanks to an ACL injury, that was his only appearance of the season.
He has played 25 times for QPR in the Championship, but at 23 and with a Spurs contract which runs until 2021, next season should give us an idea of where his long-term future lies.
Kazaiah Sterling
Sterling has two senior Tottenham appearances to his name, against Apoel in the 2017/18 Champions League and against Crystal Palace in the 2018/19 FA Cup, but his time on the pitch across those two appearances amounts to 11 combined minutes plus stoppage time.
The 21-year-old moved on loan to Sunderland last season, scoring once in eight league outings, and was supposed to get more of a chance this year at Doncaster.
However, it hasn’t worked out that way. The forward played just four times under Darren Moore due to a freak injury, scoring his only Rovers goal in the Football League Trophy.
He was sent on loan to Leyton Orient in January, but has continued to struggle with injury and has yet to make his bow.
Cameron Carter-Vickers
Last season’s successful loan spell at Swansea was enough for some Spurs fans to notice his progress, but Carter-Vickers has taken a step back this season.
A summer loan to Stoke brought more regular football, but that lessened after the departure of manager Nathan Jones, and the US international was recalled in January shortly after his 22nd birthday.
The centre-back hasn’t added to his four cup appearances for Spurs. Instead, he was sent out on loan again, joining Championship strugglers Luton Town for the remainder of the season.
