The fish and chip shop YOU say is the best in Salford

We asked you to vote for your favourite chippy in Salford – and you didn't disappoint.

If, like us, you love nothing more than tucking into a hearty portion of chips on a Friday night, this run-down is for you.

Whether you cover your chips in salt and vinegar, or accompany them with mushy peas and curry sauce, these are the top five fish and chip shops in the city - as voted for by you.

So, take note of where you should be heading the next time you can't face the washing up.

Sykes

Sykes, on Bolton Road in Swinton, proved most popular with our readers by landing first place.

Gail and Anthony Sykes, who have owned the chippy for more than 30 years, put their success down to fresh food rather than pre-cooked alternatives.

They were forced to refurbish the building to adhere to social distancing guidelines but say customers have supported them through the pandemic.

Gail, 55, of Atherton, told the Manchester Evening News : “We’re obviously very proud and we appreciate it because we’re only a small business.

“Since we’ve reopened, we’ve done a lot of alterations and customers have supported us and come back to us and not gone to the big giants.

“We had a dining area but we’ve had to close that. The building is two properties into one but we’ve had to knock through so we can get an in-and-out door.

“We use fresh Icelandic cod; we only buy the best and it’s sustainable.

“We peel the potatoes ourselves; we don’t buy. Some buy pre-cooked chips but we do it the old-school way.”

Chandos

Chandos Chippy, on Chandos Grove, came a close second with our readers. One said it is "hands down" the best chippy in Salford where others complimented their munch boxes.

Chungs

Chungs Chippy, on Oldfield Road, came joint second with Chandos, gathering the same number of votes.

One reader said the chippy does the 'best gravy ever'.

Helen Street Chippy

Helen Street Chippy, on Helen Street, Eccles, also proved popular with our readers.

One reader said: "Best chip and mushy pea barm anywhere - never mind Salford".

Mr Chips

Mr Chips, which has branches on Camp Street and Bolton Road, also made the top five of our best chip shops in Salford.

The traditional fish and chip shop first opened in 1999.

One reader commented they would "never go anywhere else" for a chippy tea.
