The First Omen To Revitalize Classic Horror Franchise

The First Omen recontextualizes the 1976 classic with new frights.

The First Omen is set to recontextualize a 1976 classic while offering new frights, and Screen Rant has a clip to get audiences excited. The movie aims to revitalize a franchise that began with 1976’s The Omen and spawned three sequels, culminating in 1991’s Omen IV: The Awakening. After a 2006 reboot of the original film, the franchise lay dormant until this newest entry, which was directed by Arkasha Stevenson and written by Stevenson, Keith Thomas, and Tim Smith.

Screen Rant is happy to present a clip from The First Omen which offers a great look at the movie’s tone and spooky nature. It features Ishtar Currie-Wilson as Anjelica, a nun, who appears terrifying and about to take action. Take a look at the clip, enjoy The First Omen trailer, and get ready to watch the movie when it hits theaters on April 5.

Thanks to The First Omen prequel timeline, the movie has an opportunity to expand on the world of the original film without navigating too many complicated story threads. The film is largely unburdened by what happens to Damien Thorn, a child born of Satan and the crux of the franchise, in The Omen, Damien: Omen II, Omen III: The Final Conflict, and Omen IV: The Awakening. Instead, the movie is able to tell a story about characters like Nell Tiger Free's Margaret, a young woman who travels from America to Rome to devote her life to God, who are absent from the original series.

Even as the prequel can explore its own world, The First Omen can retcon the franchise as a whole, potentially making it a rewarding watch for longtime fans. In this way, rather than question how the movie picks up on story threads from movies like Omen IV: The Awakening, viewers may simply enjoy an enrichment of that cinematic world. It will likely even spurn re-watches by longtime horror aficionados.

Despite the fact that The First Omen breaks The Omen canon, its unique story is also a perfect on-ramp for prospective viewers. Audiences won’t need to have seen other movies in the franchise to engage with the story of the prequel, making its creation a smart move on behalf of the filmmakers and studio. With it set so close to The Omen, however, it will be interesting to see what a follow-up movie would look like if the prequel proves to be a hit for 20th Century Studios.

The First Omen will be released in theaters on April 5. The First Omen is a horror film from director Arkasha Stevenson that acts as a prequel to the 1976 film The Omen. The film follows a young woman who goes to Rome to become a nun but begins to question her faith after encountering a terrifying darkness that aims to spawn an evil incarnate.
