The First Descendant’s new mode is Destiny 2’s Onslaught with a few extra steps

The First Descendant detailed a new mode coming to the game with the April update, and it shares both the name and some gameplay elements with Onslaught from Destiny 2.

During the livestream on April 14, The First Descendant shared gameplay of Onslaught, releasing as a beta on April 16. In Onslaught, you defend a target from waves of enemies using turrets and barriers, on top of simply defeating them with your weapons or abilities.

As you clear waves, defeat enemies, and complete side objectives, you collect resources required to build and upgrade defenses. There are Sentry Turrets and Disruption Wave Generators, each of which can be upgraded up to three levels.

Onslaught features new enemy types. Regular Vulgus enemies got a new black and orange look, but there are also new units, like Resonance Wings, Spike Spider, and Void Gunner. While there was no gameplay of it, the Onslaught mode culminates in a battle against the Colossus at the Void Intercept Battle arena.

The mode has three difficulty tiers. The first tier runs for seven waves, while the other two run for 10 waves. As rewards, you can earn Ancestor Modules, Superconductive Cooling Units, and Kuiper Shards. It will be featured on the Descendant Mission Board, and the developer mentioned a unique reward system coming with the full launch.

The gameplay is quite similar to Onslaught from Destiny 2. Similarly, it tasked players with defending an objective from waves of enemies, collecting resources, building defenses, and fighting a boss at the end. Onslaught quickly became one of Destiny‘s most popular activities, thanks to its replayability and rewards. It also served as a testing ground for many different builds, all of which can translate well to The First Descendant.

One distinct difference between the two games is that The First Descendant‘s Onslaught offers additional abilities every few rounds. You can choose one of three abilities, and you can reroll them if nothing fits your build. There are 24 abilities in the beta, ranging from immunity to immobilization to improved MP recovery, with more coming when the mode officially launches.

Beta version of Onslaught is coming to The First Descendant on April 16 and will be available until April 29. After that, the developer will implement player feedback to prepare it for the full launch on May 21. Apart from Onslaught, the April update includes a Viessa rework, Arche Tuning improvements, and more.
