The 'filthy and disgusting' state of a Vale of Glamorgan leisure centre

Swimmers are using a "filthy and disgusting" pool and showers at a Vale of Glamorgan leisure centre, councillors have been told.

Llantwit Major Leisure Centre, which serves the third largest town in the Vale, has been described by one councillor as being in such a "disgusting state of repair" that "no one wants to use it".

Councillor Jayne Norman told a full council meeting the swimming pool of the leisure centre is "dirty," the changing room is "filthy"  and the showers are "disgusting".

The councillor in charge of the Vale's leisure centres, Ben Gray, told the meeting on May 1 that he had "positive impressions" of the leisure centre and the council is committed to the building.

Cllr Norman: "The complaints we're having from residents are the state of the facilities there are dirty. The swimming pool is dirty, the changing rooms are filthy, the lockers don't work, the showers are disgusting, and nobody wants to use it.

"Members of the public are always complaining about the state (of the leisure centre) and it really needs a good clean. That doesn't cost a lot of money."

In a written question, Cllr Norman said Llantwit Major is being "sidelined" from funding for leisure facilities, and the town's infrastructure is not being invested in enough to support an increase in population from major housing developments in the area.

Cllr Gray, who is the council's cabinet member for social care, health and leisure, said the leisure centre "wasn't in the best of conditions" when he visited and he's working with officers to ensure it's clean.

He said the council would look to invest more money in the leisure centre when financial contributions come in from the developers of housing developments in the area.

Cllr Gray: "My impressions of Llantwit Major leisure centre were generally positive, there were a lot of activities going on. I was particularly pleased to see the fitness gym so well used.

"Significant money has been spent on rewiring the building. While this is something that users of the building wouldn't necessarily notice, it should demonstrate we have a commitment to that building and we're certainly not sidelining it."
