The FIFA decision that protected Marina Granovskaia and Chelsea from £52m transfer mistake

The transfer ban Chelsea served in the summer of 2019 will go down as a pivotal moment in the club’s recent history.

Would Frank Lampard have been appointed if the Blues had the ability to sign players? Arguably not.

Would Reece James, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and several other academy graduates have been brought into the first-team fold? It’s unlikely.

And would Chelsea have spent big to sign a replacement for Eden Hazard? Almost certainly. That they couldn’t has proven a blessing in disguise.

Countless players were linked with the Blues ahead and during the 2019 summer transfer window despite the fact they couldn’t officially register any new recruits until January 2020.

One of the most prominent was Luka Jovic. The Serbian striker had enjoyed a stellar campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring 27 goals, two of which came against Chelsea in the Europa League.

He was Europe’s most in-demand forward. A big transfer was inevitable. And with the Blues stuck on the transfer market sidelines, Real Madrid were able to agree a £52.4 million deal for Jovic.

The 21-year-old’s signing was part of a big recruitment drive by Real that summer. Hazard was the headline act – and expected to replace Cristiano Ronaldo – while Eder Miltao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo also joined ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Jovic started the campaign behind Karim Benzema, no shame there. But he was unable to dislodge the French striker and, in his limited opportunities on the pitch, goals were hard to come by.

He struck twice in La Liga before La Liga was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He then flouted self-isolation protocols having been allowed to return to his native country during Spain’s lockdown. Serbia’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, threatened him with arrest if he did so again.

Things deteriorated further. Jovic suffered a freak foot injury while training alone ahead of La Liga’s restart and was then forced to isolate after a friend tested positive for Covid-19. He played only 30 minutes of Real Madrid’s last ten top-flight fixtures as a result.

Chelsea were again linked with Jovic last summer and with the £130 million received for Hazard burning a hole in their back pocket, the Blues were spending heavily.

In the Covid-19 affected transfer market, Chelsea emerged as the biggest game in town. As a result, they were able to land Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and more. But no Jovic.

He remained at Real Madrid but there was no change in his fortunes. He has made only five appearances this term, scored no goals, and in November he tested positive for coronavirus.

It’s little wonder Los Blancos are ready to, temporarily at least, move on from Jovic. He is set to return to Eintracht Frankfurt on a six-month loan deal.

"If everything works out, he will be with us again soon," Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic told Sky Germany on Tuesday.

It’s been a difficult 18 months for Jovic, on and off the pitch. The 23-year-old will hope a return to the club he made his name can kick start his career, one which only includes a single standout campaign thus far.

Of course, things may have worked out very differently for Jovic had a move to Chelsea been possible in the summer of 2019. He almost certainly would’ve been given greater opportunities.

The transfer ban ultimately worked out for Chelsea, though: they missed out on the Serb but eventually signed Werner.

And even though the German has endured a difficult spell, his quality and off-field conduct is beyond doubt. The same can’t be said for Jovic.
