The FIFA decision due in 48 hours with a huge impact on Liverpool, Leeds United, Cardiff City and Swansea City - report

FIFA are reportedly set to confirm an 'indefinite extension' to the 2019-20 season and allow individual countries to decipher when each campaign will end.

The imminent decision, The Athletic report, will massively narrow the chances of the Premier League and English Football League (EFL) seasons becoming null and void.

Indefinitely extending the seasons across the world will also have a telling impact on transfer windows, meaning FIFA will have to extend the summer period.

The world's governing body will also permit extensions to contracts ending on June 30, a decision which will have a huge impact on Cardiff City and Swansea City players whose deals are set to expire this summer.

It is claimed the plan is set to be announced within the next 48 hours and it will come as a major boost for not only Cardiff and Swansea, but the likes of Leeds United, West Brom and the teams occupying the play-off spots.

Above the Championship, of course, Liverpool fans will breathe a huge sigh of relief, too, given their team sits miles ahead of closest rivals Manchester City and are on course to earn their first ever Premier League title.

The concept of voiding the season entirely would have come as a huge blow to both South Wales clubs and the chasing pack when it comes to promotion.

The Bluebirds sit just two points adrift of the play-off spots while the Swans are just a point behind them and, with nine games still set to be played in this Championship campaign, both sides will harbour ambitions of earning promotion to the Premier League.

This decision which is set to be announced now represents the greatest indicator that they will be able to do just that.

The next debate is likely to be how the leagues resume and whether those games are played behind closed doors or not.

But it is thought no definitive decision can be made until we are over the peak of this coronavirus outbreak and a clearer picture can be seen on a possible return to football in this country.
