The fields of yellow flowers which are poisonous to dogs

The fields of bright yellow flowers while walking in the countryside may look appealing.

But these swathes of yellow rapeseed fields come with a warning - they are toxic to dogs.

Pet owners have been warned to avoid rapeseed fields while out on walks with their four legged friends as the plant can cause blindness and breathing problems in dogs.

Charity Dog First Aid has posted a stark warning to pet owners over the bright yellow plant, which is a common feature across the countryside over the warmer months.

According to the Dogs Trust - which list rapeseed as "toxic" if ingested - the plant can cause symptoms such as blindness, damaged nervous system, digestive disorders, breathing problems and anaemia.

Dogs First Aid urged: "Please do try to avoid walking through them with your dogs and certainly avoid having your dog pose for photos in fields of rapeseed.

"Rapeseed is listed by Dogs Trust as toxic to our dogs if ingested.

"Please be warned that some dogs can also suffer after effects from just running through rapeseed.

“Reports have shown dogs can be super sensitive to this plant, suffering skin lesions and burn-like sores affecting their eyes and paws."

The warning is well timed as the plant begins to bloom across the county.

Rapeseed generally flowers in late spring and due to the heavy rain and warmer temperatures.
