The fearsome Moussa Dembele stat that puts Manchester United target hot on Cristiano Ronaldo's trail

His reputation continues to grown with each passing week and on Sunday night Moussa Dembele was at it again.

The striker helped himself to a clinical double as Lyon saw off Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1.

It's been an underwhelming league season for the club and their chances of securing Champions League football for next term are mixed.

Lyon sit fifth in the table but, if it weren't for Dembele's goals, they'd perhaps already be out of contention.

The former Celtic star's double took his tally for 2020 to 12.

And that means, in Europe's "top five" leagues, only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more with 13.

It takes Dembele's season total to an impressive 22 goals in 40 appearances.

Manchester United are said to retain a strong interest in the 23-year-old, with Celtic in line for a hefty pay day if he heads to Old Trafford.

Some reports have named Lyon's price-tag on the frontman as sitting as high as £80million.

His weekend exploits were also the perfect response to French TV pundit Bruno Irles, who last week rubbished Dembele's credentials as a top class player.

Irles, a former Monaco player, sneered: "We do not see a big strength that means he can aspire to an international level.

"He's not quick enough for the top level. In terms of explosiveness, and also in the way he dribbles, he's not at that top level."
