Rooney Mara has been wearing a lot of fashion. Just days into the new year and the Dragon Tattoo actor has already scored with an embellished pre-autumn 2012 Louis Vuitton black dress, and this outfit, centring around a marvellous jacket, by Givenchy. Mara is a fan of Givenchy – she chose a white haute-couture dress by the house for the movie’s world premiere. The new Tilda, you ask? No. But striking hair/makeup choices plus interesting label decisions show great promise. Photograph: Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images
This spring/summer is set to be thoroughly busy, should you be a keen partaker of pattern and print. Two of Asos’s early lead trends revolve around clothing and footwear that are full of snap, crackle and pop. This particular T-shirt is for women, though fashion spotters will note that it gives nod to the new season Givenchy menswear birds of paradise print. Oh yes.

Selfridges is making talent-spotting easy, continuing its Bright Young Things project for a second year, which sees windows and a pop-up shop given over to showcase the work of new designers. Enter labels such as Maarten van der Horst, creator of this rather smashing leaf ensemble, which was first seen on the Fashion East catwalk. There is also some cracking new menswear on offer, from the likes of Shaun Samson and Astrid Anderson.

Admittedly, this Alexander McQueen necklace is a pretty snazzy, non-economy-drive-friendly snaffle, but with its shell facade, it will immediately show you’re on board with the Deep Sea Look. Yes, really. Karl had Florence sing out of a shell at Chanel, shark tooth necklaces finished outfits at Givenchy, while Versace included starfish and seahorse motifs. Case. Rested.

Fitness is a new year cliche - unless you do it fashion-style. Topman is on this tip with its new Ltd collection range known as Sportsday. Think less sack race, more Oxbridge with a dash of Eton. Sounds annoying? It’s actually not. Good sports-inspired tops such as this S T-shirt, pleat-front slacks and some rather nice cable knitwear in burgundy with blue will jolly up Jan.
