What is it about this outfit, worn by actor Evan Rachel Wood, that oozes power with a sliver of sex? The short hair and slash of red lips brilliantly reeks of the 1980s in a city slicker/American Vogue-shoot kinda way. The pencil skirt over a fancy gown is totes refreshing and says: “I know the trends.” This Pucci jacket – yes they do other things aside from swirly whirler prints – is a great shape on Wood, with a hint of lace at the neck and a classy ribbon-style belt. Personally, I’m not feeling the shoes but it’s a small quibble.

The hottest word in fashion right now is peplum. It’s another Celine-ism. On this gorge dress by Matilda & Quinn, which launched last month, it adds just enough drama to a classic shape. Label founder Sally Hartfield is on a mission to create clothes that are fashion-forward but wearable for work. Hemlines aren’t too short, nothing is fitted too tightly and the bulk of the collection in made in the UK. Breakfast’s Sian Williams has worn one of their dresses.

Beeswax-finished cotton, a glorious colour combination plus a hood: this Albam coat is a winner. The label is firing on all cylinders. Its fourth London store opens in Covent Garden this month, and it has collaborated with interior blogger antikmodern to create a striped modernist lounge chair. Plus, the new store has a literary angle: with a “book of the month” by a young British author and in-store readings.

From the first exit at Prada spring/summer 2012 there were once again glorious somethings hanging from earlobes – more jewel-like this time, instead of bananas. Next month a capsule collection featuring these glamorous rose earrings alongside gem bracelets and necklaces, chokers and brooches arrives into stores. Perfect for party-season fashion glitz with next season verve.
