This padded quilted jacket by Lands End is this winter’s big discovery. It’s waterproof and warm – The Briefing did a road test to get a coffee in one and felt a bit Sir David Attenborough in it. There’s a removable hood, lots of pockets and it comes in this brilliant yellow, which is ideal for being a bit flashy. It also comes in red, green, navy, grey and black. High-fives all round. £120, landsend.co.uk Photograph: PR
If you’re going to wear paisley, which is totally back this spring, why not just get on with it. Because here’s a prediction – by summer it’s likely to appear on all manner of hellish maxi dresses dragging up and down the pavements of the land in a gruesome fashion. This Michael by Michael Kors cotton shirt is also a lovely item to kick start a 2012 wardrobe. Style with something plain such as slim trousers or a pencil skirt. £115, net-a-porter.com Photograph: PR
How to stop January becoming a drag? Glitter on your feet. It’s a fashion no-brainer. These Toppers raffia and pink sparkly dudes are surely the antithesis to detoxing, dieting and no bloody drinking. And they’re a bit Edina Monsoon. Fabulous – pass the bum bag etc. £60, topshop.com Photograph: PR
Gucci was born in 1921. Last year’s 90th anniversary was marked with a knockout spring/summer 12 collection rammed to the rafters with art deco and flapper-style references. There was sparkle, monochrome and trousers sporting rather nice buttons at the ankle. Basically, the 1920s is the hot decade this year. Pictures from the new Great Gatsby film seem to emerge daily – Leo’s hair, Carey Mulligan’s headscarf, Tobey Maguire’s boater. Oh, and the next Downton Abbey series is meant to be set in the roaring 20s too. That’s three things, people – ie officially a trend. Photograph: PR
Spots are set to continue into 2012, with these Comme des Garçons PLAY long-sleeve T-shirts in red, navy or black leading the charge. And seriously, what is more jolly than a polka in January? Meanwhile, Dover Street Market is about to undergo a spruce-up. There will be a new Alexander McQueen area, a revamped bags and shoes space, plus lashings of new labels including Simone Rocha and Phoebe English. From £103, doverstreetmarket.com Photograph: PR
