It’s been the year of all things Stella, so it seems fitting that in the inevitable Mariah-induced sleigh ride to the Christmas festivities, Ms McCartney should grace the hallowed LotW slot. This is a look for all the women who don’t do dresses during the party season. Stella’s ensemble is basically all about three key ingredients: a classy blazer, clutch and hair. The rest of the look, which could equally be trousers and a top or a jumpsuit, is thoroughly and marvellously understated. Guaranteed not to clash with a tinsel backdrop.

“Ali MacGraw in The Getaway,” came flying across the fashion desk when the subject of the new Toppers drop-belted boyfriend coat came up. It’s new season coat debate time and this beauty is riding high on the list. This week, rust has been decreed the new boozy. Style up with denim and navy. For full Ali points, though, it’s nonchalant belting all the way. £89, topshop.com Photograph: PR
Look, yes this Louis Vuitton item is essentially a box of postcards featuring vintage hotel labels for fifty-odd quid. But aside from the box itself being lovely these really are jolly nice postcards. And when you consider the cost of greetings cards these days, this job lot of fancy designer cards begins to look practically frugal. Plus, it’s totes the gift for the person who has everything and/or has a thing for retro typefaces/graphics. £53, louisvuitton.co.uk Photograph: PR
A hard clutch: it’s a red-carpet look. (See Michelle Pfeiffer with a gold McQueen one last week.) Basically, this is the latest evening accessory to razz up a cocktail trouser suit or an LBD. This art deco-inspired one from Reiss comes in the festive-friendly combo of magenta and gold with a rather fancy clasp. It’s also a bit Gatsby, which is so the ahead-of-the-curve buzz look right now. £110, reissonline.com Photograph: Martin Eidemak/PR company handout
