Men tend to go to pieces during the summer and start wearing ghastly items of clothing, such as plastic flip-flops, nasty combat shorts and hideous polo shirts. With this is mind, check out designer Erdem Moralioglu’s outfit, which he wore to the Martin Margiela 20 exhibition launch party held at Somerset House. Unusually he’s plumped for colour on the bottom half, which is a surprising success (try Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren Polo for something similar). Please note: he has turned the trouser hem up, but not excessively rolled it up his calf, and it is teamed with a casual, worn-looking boat shoe. The top half, meanwhile, comprises a classic crew knit over a striped T-shirt, which, with the slacks, creates a slice of subtle styling heaven. Photograph: Nick Harvey/WireImage
People, there is more to Muji than great pens (though they are pretty unbeatable on that front). Just take a butchers at this minimalist grey fan. What more could you need to keep cool in the heat? Or, more importantly, how better to channel the legend that is Chaka Khan? The singer was recently seen working the fan during an American talkshow interview with Mo’Nique. Respect.

Whether you’re Ascot bound, on a wedding guestlist or just fancy ever-so-slightly showing off, then get a new hat. This Justin Smith creation brilliantly balances hat with headband, straw with feathers. Although he’s known for his couture designs showcased during London fashion week, this new number is taken from his more affordable Mr Smith for J Smith Esq range, which sells exclusively at Fenwick. The store in London’s New Bond Street is about to emerge from a major facelift.

These Grenson (est 1866) shoes are called Howard (a name due for a comeback any day now); plus, when taken out of their box, they were immediately christened “a bit Prince Charles”. This is always a good thing. And now for the shoe science: these have been totally deconstructed so they are almost inexplicably soft and comfy. To add to their marvellousness, they have a 1970s-style leather trim.

Mark Fast is known for two things: super-sexy knitwear and putting plus-size models on his London catwalk. Now the designer has worked his body-con knitted magic for Topshop with a limited collection of five signature pieces, set to hit stores on 25 June. Make a note of this date if you’re vaguely interested because, be warned, certain friends of the briefing have been behaving like stalkers to get the skinny on this for weeks. Despite its not-the-easiest-thing-on-the-rack appearance, this is gonna go. Fast, naturally.
