Singer Alison Goldfrapp clearly knows about the compensation theory: if you pick a shimmery, sequined, wide-sleeve top with a trompe-l'oeil striped tie, you need to go easy on the bottom half. Cleverly avoiding the potential clownishness of this outfit, she plumps for straight-leg white trousers, plain shoes and simple clutch. We love her corkscrew curls too. This month, Louis Vuitton launches the Seduction shoe collection, featuring boots that do indeed come with zips that allow them to be worn at ankle, knee or thigh length. Or you can wear the top nattily folded down. That makes each look about £350 a go, but even at that price they are rather genius.

This new graphic print dress arrives in branches of Warehouse next week. Blessed as it is with a roomy sleeve and a knee-length finish, we think it might be rather popular. Go forth, shoppers and conquer.

In February, up-and-coming designer Martine Rose showed a series of shirts during London fashion week. Liberty has selected six which can be made to order. Mixing high-performance fabrics such as Aertex with traditional cottons, Rose's designs also feature unusual finishing touches such as foil circles and nerdy quilting.

The trend for the maxi continues. But now it's time to invest in something with a little more polish. This jersey cotton tie-dye number evokes a summery beach vibe, but the gold embellishment takes you from lounger to bar.

Men's swimwear is tricky. These shorts by Dunhill are not cheap but we like the fact that they look like regular shorts, and thus multi-task. The side pockets will keep your cocktail allowance safe and they also come with a handy drawstring pouch with waterproof lining, so you can pack them in your suitcase even if they're soggy.
