The fashion briefing

Style briefing October 2: Style briefing October 2 Look of the week
Look of the week: How can you not love that bun? Seriously, look at it. Magda Berliner has her own label, sold mainly in America and Japan, and models the clothes herself on her website. She also works, perhaps rather unsurprisingly given the brilliance of this look, as a stylist. Her vintage floral YSL jacket is a great big dollop of jolly that allows the Michael Jackson T-shirt to blend into the look rather than being the glaring statement piece. Teaming an elegant mini (her own design) with some rock‘n’roll spark in the form of Alexander Wang’s buckled ankle boots gives a modern edge. The final touches are worth noting: short gold necklaces act like a collar. And nothing makes an outfit like a smile. Photograph: www.streetpeeper.com/www.streetpeeper.com
Style briefing October 2: Style briefing October 2 gloves
The steal: Here comes news from the Marks & Spencer website of an “elasticated wrist feature”. That this function comes in the form of a pair of really warm gloves, in a hue of blue bordering on the electric, is all the more thrilling. Plus, there is change from a tenner. You couldn’t make it up. £7, Marks & Spencer, marksandspencer.com Photograph: 008/PR company handout
Style briefing October 2: Style briefing October 2 shoe
Shoe of the week: If you’re going to rock around precariously on a platform, it might as well be gold. Taken from Kurt Geiger’s first cruise range, this peep-toe number is one of a 25-strong footwear collection brimming with glitz. Hello, golden wedges, crystal-encrusted shoe-boots and regal velvets. Gen sandals, £240, 0845 257 2571 Photograph: PR company handout

Splurge: This Graham & Spencer animal-print shirt is for people who cannot erase the Bet Lynch factor from a traditional spot of leopard but still want to partake in one of the year’s biggest looks. The shirt is silk, well cut, far more fitted than it looks, with darts in the back for added shape – and it’s versatile. Team with a swish skirt (see Banana Republic’s Cassandra below) for an upscale look or with jeans and biker boots for a more nonchalant approach. £266, 020-7580 8644 Photograph: PR company handout
Style briefing October 2: Style briefing October 2 skirt
Women's buy of the week: Meet Cassandra, a champagne silk cocktail skirt by Banana Republic (they name their skirts, you see). It’s a grown-up mini, that is for sure, with interesting pleats that add an expensive air to the mix. There is also a black version. Finally, this skirt has a whiff of next season Celine about it, as made over by former Chloé designer Phoebe Philo: not to be sniffed at. £75, available from 16 November, 020 7758 3550 Photograph: PR company handout
Style briefing October 2: Style briefing October 2: Men's shirt
Men's buy of the week: And the party shirt hunt begins. This moustache-emblazoned number by Burton is a snappy offering that celebrates upper-lip hair in a dashing monochrome palette. For the month of November, the brand is encouraging men to grow a moustache in the name of charity (the Prostate Cancer Charity, to be precise). One tip: avoid a bow-tie contact with this shirt unless you’re deliberately trying to look like a dodgy comedian. £25, burton.co.uk Photograph: PR company handout
