The fashion briefing

The fashion briefing: MADONNA
Look of the week
Ladylike with a twist: With her grey below-the-knee pencil skirt complete with fishtail detail at the back, you would be forgiven for thinking Madonna was feeling demure. But teamed with a black leather biker jacket, fishnet tights, fingerless leather gloves and hoop earrings she gives the timeless classic a shot of sex appeal.

The waiting list
Emma Cook’s new capsule knitwear collection for Topshop hits stores on 12 November. The colourful retro pieces are emblazoned with first names that were popular in the 80s (Denise, Claire, Sarah). Genius. Choose from a dress, jumper or – fashion-desk favourite – the oversized cardigan, and relive your Pepsi & Shirlie days.

The fashion briefing: necklace
Splurge
If Holly Golightly were skipping around town right now, she’d be wearing this pearl-and-pin necklace by Tom Binns with her little black dress or some skinny jeans and a pair of ankle boots. Best worn with smoky eyes, like a punk Audrey Hepburn, to get the right mood.

Women's buy of the week
This silk wrap-dress with muted brushstrokes of colour makes the heart skip a beat. It is crying out for a pair of thick woolly tights and a chunky belted cardy – to be worn while eating hot, buttered crumpets in front of an open fire.

Men's buy of the week
Inspired by Ben Whishaw’s wardrobe as poet John Keats in Bright Star, we tried to write an ode. We gave up and decided to wear these instead. Pre-distressed for perfect autumn leaf-kicking moments.

The fashion briefing: long johns
Weird and wonderful
Long-johns have gone glam and a little bit nu-rave in these neon colours. Uniqlo says they have a Heat Tech “secret weapon” that turns moisture into heat to keep you warm. Wear them on their own (if you’re feeling brave) or layered under trousers to keep you cosy as the nights draw in.
