The fashion briefing

The style briefing: Sarah Jessica Parker
Look of the week
Let us praise Sarah Jessica Parker’s loyal services to fashion. Of late, there has been much nit-picking over her outfit choices – hello, it’s SJP, just ignore the mistakes and move on. This draped affair is a lovely off-duty dress, accessorised with a simple bag, a flash of gold necklace, gorgeous heels and jolly nice hair. She looks just as good in the new Sex and the City 2 trailer: there she's in a tux with bow tie and crimped hair, wearing couture in Abu Dhabi. Plus there’s also Liza Minnelli doing a number, Samantha in gold harem trousers and Aidan! Yes Aidan!

Jury’s out
Reports suggest that bloomers are back on the scene. Well, there has been every other possible permutation on shorts – city ones, cut-off ones, cuffed ones and so on – so it’s no surprise to encounter another stage in the evolution of shorts. Note: one member of the fashion desk known for risk-taking is concerned about their bulge-in-the-wrong-places potential. If you’re game, but scared, why not start with this denim pair by Velvet? The fabric is familiar, even if the cut is not.

Pass the Prada
As yet there is no known science surrounding how one designer logo can be deemed acceptable while another is ridiculed. While investigations are ongoing, consider one of these canvas totes. They come in lots of super colours – including orange, red, royal blue or a classic cream – and are bound to come in handy in all manner of scenarios.

Bargain of the week
You gotta love the ’qlo (that’s fashion speak for Uniqlo) and its smashing new collection of softly-softly tailoring that drapes and shapes like a dream. Top pick is this grey silk blazer with slouchy pockets (probably best not to put anything in them mind as it’ll ruin the line). All this jacket needs is a white T-shirt and you’re done. If this feels too Sam Cam – this is not judging, just acknowledging – try with a flash of colour instead.

The great shoe debate
Here’s a sandal likely to divide footwear obsessives. It could be construed as the ideal shoe in the pursuit of an ironic sexy geek vibe complete with a slice of 70s dinner lady. Or perhaps it is simply the most practical piece of summery footwear ever to grace this page?

Men's buy of the week
Who would have thought that the odd little squirt from that Hugh Grant film About A Boy aeons ago would end up inducing severe lust over a pair of sunglasses? It seems a huge leap. Back then, however, Nicholas Hoult was a child actor and now he has grown into a fine young man. Having appeared in A Single Man, directed by Tom Ford, he is now modelling the designer-director’s eyewear in the current ads. Quite right. Tom Ford’s sunglasses are in a class of their own. Right now it’s hard to find better specs for men.
