She may no longer be sexing it up at the helm of Paris Vogue but that doesn’t mean Carine Roitfeld is planning to disappear from fashion life. Au contraire. Here she is at a Chanel bash in a gorgeous white dress: love the high neck, longer hem-line and beautifully intricate sleeves, and after the royal wedding dress, aren’t we all about posh sleeves? If there was any danger of this looking virgin-prim, CR swiftly swerved from it with a dash of leopard coat and a pair of red and black open- shoe boots. Divine. Photograph: Nebinger Frederic/Abaca
The talk in shoe world is of platform-busting heels or power flats – all one extreme to another. And despite the recent kitten heel resurgence on the catwalk, it’s a look that has failed to ignite mainstream interest. Enter the mid-height sandal with a blockier heel, such as these totally brilliant vegetarian catwalk shoes by Stella McCartney. Are they the next big thing? Toes crossed.

This crepe dress is admittedly rather nippy in the length department, but what it lacks in skirt it makes up for in glorious greenness – or navy – with a slick of gold zip at the back of the neck. But there is another reason for flagging up this dress: the trousers-with-tunic look. As in, add a pair of (wide or slender) slacks underneath a dress and, hurrah, you’re a bit Céline. You’re also a bit next season. Double whoop.

Aviator. Well, sort of. There can never be a one-size-fits-all approach to sunglasses, what with everyone’s face shape suiting different things. But these Diane von Furstenberg specs do feel modern – perhaps it’s their fuss-free, non-oversized approach. In other sun-specs microtrend news, there’s the cat’s-eye frame. Think 50s retro. See Prada.

Finally, menfolk of the UK can join the J Crew club, thanks to an exclusive tie-up with Mr Porter. The US brand, set up in 1983 and popular with the style conscious from Michelle Obama to Jake Gyllenhaal, make low key, great-quality staples at realistic prices. It’s not fashion central – you won’t find acid brights, but stuff like this timeless Madras check shirt. There are also mighty fine chino shorts. Investigate.
