The fashion briefing

The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: Nicola Roberts
If Cheryl is the mainstream Girls Aloud fashion princess then Nicola Roberts (above) is the band member most likely to try high-risk trends. Check it out. She’s quite the racy thigh-high boot and cropped leather bomber experimenter, and she’s also building up a Chanel bag collection to rival Lily Allen’s. A special mention also for the hairdo, which we love. Photograph: Nick Harvey/Nick Harvey/WireImage.com
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: Katie Eary
Katie Eary made her catwalk debut at the MAN show last week. It wasn’t a show to construct a shopping list from, but, boy, was it an eye-catching spectacle. The clothes were packed with myriad anatomical references: a pearl ribcage, skeleton-inspired hand covers (the new glove?) and laser-cut brass sandals, all of which were designed in collaboration with jewellery label Mawi. Totally one to watch. Photograph: Zak Hussein/PA
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: Erdem
It’s an Erdem double whammy this week. Fast becoming one of London fashion week’s stars (he’s another young designer Anna Wintour has taken under her wing), Erdem has upcoming projects with Smythson, for whom he has created books and diaries (on sale from November) featuring his illustrations and floral prints. We’ve seen them and they’re stunning. Meanwhile, he also collaborated on fantastic circular sunglasses with specs experts Cutler & Gross, which appeared on his catwalk last week. These too feature his prints, though you’ll have to wait till next year to get your mitts on those. Photograph: Chris Jackson/Getty Images
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: feathered headdress
We’ve all marvelled at the Louis Vuitton bunny ears – a surprise celebrity hit. Next for attention-seekers: the feathered headdress. Givenchy showed a stunning white one for this season, while Roksanda Ilincic proposed a brooding black version for next spring. If this all feels a bit experimental for you, avoid splashing designer bucks and instead get a bargain one, from Freedom at Topshop. This one comes complete with glitzy jewelled tiara. £45, 01277 844476 Photograph: PR
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: Armani clutch
The velvet trend is never going to be a walk in the fashion park. We know stylists who might hang the stuff at their windows but wear it? Don’t be silly. But this gorgeous Emporio Armani clutch in chic slate grey (it comes in a rich emerald green too) could be the solution. Ideal as an evening bag to match your cocktail finery or try ramping up a day look by shoving this under a denim jacket-clad arm. £200, 020-7491 8080 Photograph: PR
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: DM boots
Are DM boots really having a moment again? Hell, yeah. The most recognisable clumpy boot of all time was repeatedly spotted at the shows last week. Most popular were the glossy black patent version. On the catwalk of Heikki Salonen, a new designer showing as part of Fashion East, every model wore either a matte-black or brown version. There’s also a recently opened pop-up store in Spitalfields, plus an ongoing collaboration with Raf Simons. Resistance is futile. £70, store.drmarten.co.uk Photograph: PR
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: peep-toe show
The peep-toe shoe for autumn reeks of impracticability and yet is one of the hottest foot looks around. This wedge pair, with their flash of gold, look like they’d support your ankles – always a bonus. From Asos Black, the website’s new in-house designed premium collection, which features around 50 pieces, including clothing, and launches on 2 October. £100, asos.com Photograph: PR
The fashion briefing: The fashion briefing: Mr Hare
Oxford shoes are a wardrobe classic. These two-tone monochrome ones (a mix of suede and leather) are by Mr Hare – the hottest name in men’s footwear to drop right now. On the company’s website, the brand, set up by Marc Hare, describe its customer as thus: “Mr Hare’s man is sartorially, a swan amongst geese, worldly in the modern way and as rural as urban.” Couldn’t have put it better ourselves. £365, oki-ni.com Photograph: PR
