The fancy cycle shelter 'no-one asked for, wanted or hardly ever uses' in this Swansea community

This is the shiny new cycle shelter erected when it wasn’t wanted - and which isn’t used, according to the town’s deputy mayor.

Pontarddulais town councillor David Beynon claimed there was no demand for the facility in the first place.

The structure was placed around six months ago, and stands close to Pontarddulais Library.

But Councillor Beynon said it was barely used, to the frustration of those who had made appeals to the local authority to fund other local features.

He said: “It is a top-of-the range bike shed and must have cost thousands.

“It was put up about six months ago, but no-one asked for it, and no-one has used it.

“It is nice and shiny, and it looks fine, but it must have cost a lot of money, and we are often told there is no money for things, but somehow money was found for this, even though no-one wanted it.

“People see me and ask what is that monstrosity and who asked for it and who paid for it?

“It is top of the range, a lovely thing, but what is it for?”

A Swansea Council spokesman said: "The bicycle storage equipment has been installed as part of a wider package of measures to support and encourage other sustainable methods of transport in Swansea. It was funded via a Welsh Government Grant which is supporting our efforts to boost cycling as a way of getting around the city.

"Active travel funding has been invested in other measures including the provision of new cycle links in communities in Swansea.

"We have had a very positive response to the work completed so far, especially from local schools and cycle groups who are encouraging young people to cycle and be more healthy."
