The famous faces at Dublin's MTV Music Awards in 1999 from Britney to Eminem

Take a trip back to the late '90s when Dublin hosted the MTV Music Awards.

The chosen venue to host the event on November 11, 1999 was The Point - which has had various name changes down through the years yet many of us from certain eras still fondly call it by its original name.

It comes as no surprise that it was a star-studded occasion with massive names of the era like Britney Spears and Whitney Houston arriving in the capital to attend the award show. Of course, there was our own home-grown talent too, including Boyzone, Westlife and U2.

Take a look at the selection of photos we uncovered from the night and reminisce on their hits from 1999.

The princess of pop released her iconic album Baby One More Time packed with hits in January 1999 and changed pop music forever. On the night of the awards in Dublin she took home four awards for 'Best Pop', 'Best Female', 'Best Breakthrough Artist' and 'Best Song'. Those lucky enough to attend got to see Britney perform '(You Drive Me) Crazy' as well as the beloved classic 'Baby One More Time'.

The Venga Boys

When thinking of The Venga Boys one specific line comes to mind for those who grew up in the 90s - 'I want you in my room'. In 1999, the Dutch Eurodance group released their second album, The Party Album which included their hit, 'Boom Boom Boom Boom'. They had been nominated in the 'Breakthrough Artist' category but lost out to Britney on the night.

Eminem took the top spot for 'Best Hip-Hop' at The Point beating strong contenders such as Busta Rhymes and Beastie Boys. Back in 1999, the infamous rapper released 'My Name Is' which was the most successful song from his 1999 album The Slim Shady LP.

Westlife

Fresh on the scene in the late '90s, our very own Westlife were nominated for 'Best Breakthrough Artist' which was awarded to Ms Spears. Fans of the boyband will fondly remember 1999 as the year that their album Westlife was played in many a bedroom with hits like 'Flying Without Wings' and 'If I Let You Go'. They really knew how to tug on teenage girls' heartstrings.

1999 was a memorable year for absolute pop hits and Christina Aguilera didn't let us down by bringing 'Genie in a Bottle' to the table. Not only was Christina a valued member of the '90s pop scene, but she was also a fashion icon of the era with her signature belly tops which she sported on the night in Dublin.
