The family of recently deceased Northam artist hopes to recover stolen artwork

A beautiful streetscape photograph featuring the Castle Hotel in York has been stolen from the artist Derek Kimberley's home just days after his death.

A Midwest family are calling for help to recover a valuable photograph stolen from a recently deceased family member's home.

The sudden death of award-winning Northam photographer and artist 47-year-old Derek Kimberley has shocked his family and the local community.

The family is preparing for Derek's funeral next week but is also reeling from his house being burgled just days after his death.

Brother Paul Kimberley believed the property may have been targeted after Derek's death and he has pleaded with those involved to return one of the artist's prize-winning photographs that was removed from the wall.

"The main thing we want to get back is that picture, just return it no questions asked, we just want it back," Mr Kimberley said.

"It's a really nice picture; Mum would love it. She is going through hell at the moment and this is all she needs."

The panoramic streetscape featuring the Castle Hotel in York won a York Society Photographic award.

Mr Kimberley believed the thieves knew the property was vacant.

"It is hard to keep anything a secret these days with social media and all the rest of it," he said.

"Word of mouth gets around pretty quickly; I think they just saw the opportunity and they went for it."

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Northam Police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
