The fall of Omar al-Bashir: What next for Sudan after coup?

After Algeria's Abdelaziz Bouteflika, it's out with Sudan's Omar al-Bashir. Celebrations in Khartoum greeted the news that the country's strongman of three decades had been placed under house arrest. What started back in December as cost-of-living protests came to a head with the army stepping in to protect those staging a sit-in outside the army headquarters - headquarters where Omar al-Bashir is now reportedly being held.

It's definitely a coup, but what kind? The defence minister who announced Bashir's ouster was a deputy chief of staff who's under US sanctions for his role in atrocities committed in Darfur.

What's left of Bashir's 29-year rule and the military man's apparatus, his militias, his feared National Intelligence and Security Service? Who will succeed him? And what of the democratic aspirations of protesters from very different walks of life who in some cases gave their lives?

What prospects going forward for this giant of Africa and the Arab world?

Produced by Alessandro XENOS, Ingri BERGO and James VASINA.
