The Fall could be returning for a new series teases star Gillian Anderson

Hit BBC crime series The Fall starring Jamie Dornan could be set for a sensational return to our TV screens, according to actor Gillian Anderson.

The psychological drama which was set and filmed in Belfast came to an end in 2016 but one of the show's main stars has hinted that it could be returning.

Gillian Anderson, who played Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson who was on the hunt for serial killer Paul Spector played by Jamie Dornan in the epic cat-and mouse thriller, has now revealed that there are discussions about a new series.

In an interview for Variety Actors on Actors with Handmaid’s Tale star, Elisabeth Moss, Gillian confirmed the news about a return of the show, which has sent fans into a spin.

She said: "That's something we are in discussions about."

“Even when we ended those three seasons, we talked about the fact that one day, maybe in the same way that Prime Suspect came back, there were huge breaks between their seasons.

“Our writer-creator-director Allan Cubitt has been ready to dip back in and revisit it and her [DSI Stella Gibson]. And so that is being discussed. I think it would be fun.”

The Fall was a huge hit when it first aired on BBC back in 2013 but more recently it won a whole new army of fans around the world following its release onto streaming site Netflix last year.
