The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan was struggling to pay his rent even after his first Captain America appearance, the actor has revealed.
Stan stars alongside Anthony Mackie in the new Disney Plus series, which sees the pair team up in the wake of Captain America’s retirement and the rise of a new threat.
Stan has played Bucky Barnes AKA The Winter Soldier since 2011, appearing in the Captain America trilogy of movies, as well as other Marvel movies including Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame. But he’s revealed that being cast in the franchise still didn’t leave him financially comfortable in its earliest years.
“In 2011, after the first Captain America came out, about a month later I had a call from my business manager telling me I had a month left to figure out how I was going to pay my rent,” Stan told Entertainment Tonight.
“So, perception is always interesting, isn’t it? Nobody ever knows what the f*** is really happening.”
When Stan was cast in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, he had largely made a living from supporting roles in films including Black Swan and Hot Tub Time Machine, as well as guest spots on TV series such as Gossip Girl.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which has been met by largely mixed reviews, marks Stan’s first starring role in a Marvel property, as well as his 10th year in the franchise.
“Ten years of checks, boy!” Mackie joked in the same interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Cut the check all day! Sebastian Stan! Winning! Bang, bang, bang.”
The first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has already sparked slight uproar among fans because of its cliffhanger ending.
The show will also reportedly set up at least three forthcoming spin-off series. Read our review of the first episode here.
