The factor that could sway Russell Martin Rangers sack decision

Andy Halliday has divulged the main factor he thinks would sway the Rangers board to change their stance on Russell Martin.

Andrew Cavenagh threw his support behind the head coach on Sunday despite their 2-0 defeat to Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday.

The result leaves Martin without a league win in five games, and it means Rangers have made their worst start to a season in 47 years.

Chants of 'Martin, get to f***,' were audible throughout Saturday afternoon, as supporters made their feelings of discontent known.

By full time, there were vast sections of the stadium empty, as fans had seen enough and left before the end.

Halliday reckons if attendances dropped off considerably from the usual 50,000 sell-out for this weekend's cup quarter-final against Hibernian, before the Europa League opener against Genk, then Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe may have to change their minds on sacking the boss.

"In my time watching Rangers, I have never seen this level of toxicity or (anything) even close that has won over the fans," the Motherwell midfielder said on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard. "Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers have made their stance (clear) to stick by Russell Martin and that's fine.

"But I think where they will get a real shock is when they see the attendance at the Hibs game and the number of Europa League packages sold.

"I thought this was coming. There is not going to be as many bums on seats.

"They 49ers are not at the games to see the toxicity and the atmosphere but when they watch it on telly and see an attendance of 25,000-30,000 against Hibs or in the Europa League, that might be what sort of catches their attention."
