It's time.
It's time for Gary Lineker, a man who served his country with pride as a footballer and helped us to a World Cup semi-final, then went on to present the football show in the English-speaking world, to get off his presenter’s chair and into the big chair at the Football Association.
He has the nous.
He has the cojones.
He has the political cleverness and clout in global football to make a real difference to English football.
At nearly 60, he is also at a stage where I’d love him to say, ‘Do I want to be remembered as the man who was Mr Match Of The Day for 30 years or as someone who made much-needed changes to the game I love?’
If he’s happy doing what he does then I’d love to see Les Ferdinand or Gary Neville get the job.
Les played the game at the highest level for a number of clubs, represented his country and has been a football administrator for almost six years now.
While Gary, a former Manchester United captain, has proved himself an astute businessman and club owner since his playing days.
It might be a bit early for him but I’d rather see someone growing into the role than another jobbing administrator from the Post Office or county associations, or a former headmaster, parachuted in.
It’s time for a freshness that any one of those three would bring.
The FA needs it.
