The eye-watering wage increases at Leeds United since the start of the Premier League

We all know that football isn't cheap to watch or follow in 2020.

Indeed, over the years the beautiful game has gradually got more expensive for supporters, whether it be the price of tickets or merchandise or sky-high subscriptions to TV packages.

The same can be said for clubs themselves.

The biggest outlay, of course, is players' wages.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has now compared what clubs paid out to playing staff back in 1992 - when the Premier League started - to what is paid out today.

Maguire, an expert at the University of Liverpool, has compiled data on some of England's biggest clubs, including Leeds United.

The Whites' annual wage bill back in 1992 - when they were reigning First Division champions - was £5.3million.

That equates to £100,000 per week being handed to players.

The figure today stands at a whopping £31.4million - that represents a huge increase of 497 per cent in the 28-year period.

It also equates to £603,846 going to the playing staff each week.

But how does Leeds' figures compare to their rivals?

Manchester United’s wage bill has grown from £7.6m in 1992 to £332.2m in 2020 - a huge increase of 4280 per cent.

Liverpool’s wage bill has grown from £7.7m in 1992 to £310m at present - An increase of 3945 per cent.

Sheffield Wednesday have seen their wages bill increase by 802 per cent from £4.7m to £42.4m today.

Sheffield United had a budget of £3m back in 1992 but today that figure stands at £40.2m - a rise by 1284 per cent.
