The extraordinary numbers behind Leeds United's 16-year wait for Premier League promotion

It took 744 games, but Leeds United are back in the Premier League - as champions.

When United were relegated to the Championship back in 2004 no one thought it would take this long to get back to the top, but it has. It’s been a long 16 years for Leeds and sometimes it felt like the years of hurt would never end.

Here, LeedsLive take a look back over some of the stats behind Leeds’ years in the wilderness.

League positions over time

Leeds have spent much of their time in the EFL as a mid-table side, never really looking like promotion contenders.

Ups and downs

Like our anthem says, we’ve had our ups and downs.

Until Marcelo Beilsa came to the club though it felt like the downs outweighed the ups.

Awarding Leeds a point for every win and taking one away for every loss shows us how for much of the 2010s it felt like the club was in a steady, but sustained decline.

Record in the league and playoffs

Leeds have played 745 games in the league and playoffs since being relegated back in 2004.

League games played: 745
Games won: 318
Drawn: 176
Lost: 251
Win percentage: 43%

THE PLAYERS

A total of 270 players have taken to the pitch in the league for Leeds since the start of the 2004/05 campaign.

Some of them made nearly 200 league appearances for the club, becoming legends in the process. Players such as Luciano Becchio and Jonny Howson.

A total of 15 players though made just one appearance for the club, such as Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Mansour Assoumani and Léandre Griffit.
