The expected Bristol Rovers team to face Walsall: Sam Finley a doubt but Ryan Loft returns

Joey Barton's Bristol Rovers hope to build their momentum after going four games unbeaten in League Two with Walsall the visitors to the Mem on Saturday.

The Gas have taken 10 points from their past four games to climb to 13th in the table and confidence is growing in Barton's squad, with strong competition for places building in most areas of the pitch.

Rovers will be boosted by the return of Ryan Loft after missing Tuesday's win at Scunthorpe United, but there are concerns over the fitness of midfield maestro Sam Finley.

This is how Rovers are expected to line up against Walsall...

Goalkeeper and defence

James Belshaw will start in goal for the Gas with Anssi Jaakkola providing cover on the bench.

Barton has preferred to use a back four of late, and the form of Luca Hoole and Josh Grant might force the manager’s hand to keep the same setup.

A four-man defence of Hoole, Connor Taylor, James Connolly and Grant, therefore, could be selected again.

Harry Anderson, Nick Anderton and Pablo Martinez are options for the bench.

Alex Rodman is on the verge of a return from injury but this game may come too soon for him, while Alfie Kilgour’s knee issue is set to rule him out again.

Cian Harries has missed the last two games with soreness in his neck but he could be back in the fold on Saturday.

Trevor Clarke will not be involved after undergoing surgery this week, and Junior Brown is unlikely to feature with Barton seeing the player’s future elsewhere.

Midfield

Sam Finley was rated a 50/50 chance to play by Barton on Thursday after the all-action midfielder limped off against a Scunthorpe with a muscle complaint. His chances of playing against Walsall depend on the results of a scan, but it would be no surprise if he is rested on Saturday with a view to playing next week at Sutton United.

Paul Coutts will retain his place in the middle of the park, with Glenn Whelan in line to return to the side after missing two games due to a family bereavement.

Attack

Rovers have strength in depth in attacking midfield, meaning one man will consider himself unlucky to be left out.

With Ryan Loft available again after missing the Scunthorpe game, he will lead the line for the Gas.

Antony Evans, Aaron Collins, Sam Nicholson and Luke Thomas are vying for the three places behind the striker, with Evans and Collins appearing certain starters on current form.

Nicholson could get the nod ahead of Thomas, but the Barnsley loanee is pushing hard for regular starts.

Midweek goalscorer Leon Clarke and Brett Pitman will be available for Barton to call on from the bench, with Harvey Saunders also set to be included after recovering from a long-term ankle injury.

Sion Spence and Ryan Jones could also be included.

Rovers: (4-2-3-1): Belshaw; Hoole, Taylor, Connolly, Grant; Coutts, Whelan; Nicholson, Evans, Collins; Loft.
