The exclusive club Luuk de Jong joined as his brace fired Sevilla to Europa League glory

Newcastle United flop Luuk de Jong was the hero on Friday night, as his brace against Inter Milan helped secure a record sixth Europa League triumph for Spanish side Sevilla.

The Dutch international's two-goal haul set Julen Lopetegui's side on their way to an impressive 3-2 win over Antonio Conte's men at the RheinEnergie Stadion in Koln.

The 29-year-old cancelled out Romelu Lukaku's early opening goal from the penalty spot, as he got across his marker to plant a diving header beyond Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

He then doubled his tally and put Sevilla 2-1 ahead with a towering header that looped beyond the grasp of the Slovenian international.

It meant de Jong become only the seventh player to score a brace in the Europa League final, joining Diego Forlan, Radamel Falcao, Carlos Bacca, Coke, Antoine Griezmann and Eden Hazard in an exclusive club.

Newcastle fans were flabbergasted when they saw their former forward score the winner against Manchester United in Sunday's semi-final and he has now gone on to surpass that achievement as he wrote his name into Sevilla folklore.

Fomer Magpies boss Alan Pardew had initially chased de Jong in the summer of 2012 after the Dutch international had notched 32 goals for FC Twente during the 2011/12 campaign.

However, de Jong made the move to German side Borussia Monchengladbach instead but after 18 months of struggling to cement his place at the Bundesliga side, the 29-year-old did eventually make the move to Tyneside.

In January 2014, de Jong joined on a loan deal until the end of the season but he failed to make an impact as he struggled with the physicality of the Premier League.

He failed to find the back of the net at all and after returning to Germany, he made the move back to the Netherlands in 2014 to join PSV.

It was in Eindhoven that de Jong rediscovered his goalscoring touch as he bagged 112 goals in 204 appearances to help PSV to three Eredivisie titles.

That encouraged Sevilla to make their move last summer and although he hasn't been scoring with the same regularity, he has found the net 10 times in his first season in Southern Spain.
