The exciting six-year bumper contract that Newcastle United have handed to Jacob Murphy

Jacob Murphy has signed a bumper long-term deal with Newcastle United - after interest from elsewhere came to nothing.

The Toon winger, who impressed last season, had attracted interest from Glasgow Rangers and newly promoted Watford, but opted to sign a six-year deal at St James' Park.

It means Murphy, who was due to see his current arrangement run out in 2022, was thrown one last chance to make it big at United last season by Steve Bruce.

And he responded in style with a fantastic campaign which resulted in him signing a contract until 2027.

Murphy's agency New Era Global said: "Congratulations to client Jacob Murphy who has signed a new six-year contract with Newcastle United.

"We look forward to the season ahead and continuing the journey with you Jacob!"

The news was greeted by former England and Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand with the following message.

Ferdinand says: "New targets set and go again."

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce said: "I'm delighted to extend the players' contracts.

"They all have a thorough understanding of this club and what it takes to play here, and they have all made excellent contributions over recent years.

"The hard work preparing for the new season has already begun and we’re looking forward to building momentum as we head towards the big kick-off next month."
