The exact date you should take your Christmas tree down according to tradition

People all over the world will be welcoming in 2022 in just days, but despite Christmas being over - and another 362 days to go until we do it all over again - many people still have their decorations up.

Deciding when to remove the festive ornaments varies from household to household with some wanting it down straight after Christmas and other wanting to keep it up for as long as possible.

But is there really a date that you should be taking it down?

And if so, what is this date and why does tradition dictate we should do it on that specific date?

Well according to Good House Keeping, people should take their Christmas trees down either on January 5 or January 6.

They explain: "Dating back to the fourth century, many Christians have marked the end of the Christmas season on the Twelfth Night (or 12 nights after Christmas) - an evening also known as the Eve of the Epiphany."

This date is said to mark the day the Wise Men visited baby Jesus and is either celebrated on January 5 or January 6 - depending on whether you Christmas Day as day one or not.

They continue: "Although Christian groups reportedly disagree over which date is the correct one, tradition dictates that the Twelfth Night is the best time to take down your festive decorations - including your tree. It's believed that waiting too long after the Twelfth Night will bring bad luck."

Taking your Christmas tree down obviously isn't illegal though with many taking it down on Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and even New Year's Day itself.

So whilst there isn't one 'correct' answer, there is a tradition people stick to - and it varies. Though it's understandable if people want to leave it up a bit longer for some much-needed joy.
