The ex-Chelsea player who would be perfect for Frank Lampard's current Blues side

Frank Lampard has made a pretty promising start to life as Chelsea head coach.

The Blues boss has seen his debut season cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, with the club in a decent position.

When, or if, the campaign does resume then the Blues will be inside the top four and in the quarter-final of the FA Cup against Leicester City.

Of course, they also have the Champions League last 16 second leg to play at Bayern Munich, however being 3-0 down that is going to be a tough ask.

Blues fans have also seen what they have wanted for some time, and that is the emergence of several academy players coming through and getting their chance in the first team.

Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori have played key roles within the season, while Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi are also developing.

Despite the ups, there has been some disappointments along the way as well, and one of those appears to be the defensive unit.

The Blues have kept just six Premier League clean sheets this season, ranking them 13th in the table.

And if there was one player who Lampard would love to have back in his side, it would be former skipper John Terry.

This season, the defensive pairings at the back have been shifted about regularly. Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen were used regularly early in the season, with Antonio Rudiger injured.

When the German returned, he came back into the side, but there was a struggle to find a real connection between two players.

Lampard has also gone to use the 3-4-3 formation at times, something that worked well both times in the wins over Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Terry’s ability at the back to bring players together and be the real leader is something which is missing right now.

In his 492 Premier League appearances, the former skipper was part of a defence which only conceded 251 goals and kept 214 clean sheets.

With a tackle success rate of 77% and 1,362 duels one, Terry was one of the most commanding defenders the Premier League has ever seen.

Blues supporters don’t really need a history lesson on the abilities of their former captain, but maybe a reminder of how he could be vital right now.

Not just his defending, but also his leadership skills right now would be vital.

Several times this season, the Blues have dominated matches but then let leads slip or conceded at vital moments.

Someone like Terry in the side would certainly have put that to rest.
