The ex-Arsenal captain tipped to replace Unai Emery as head coach - and it's not Mikel Arteta

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has backed Patrick Vieira to take over from Unai Emery if he is sacked.

The ex-Gunners man has suggested that the Nice boss would be a perfect fit at the Emirates should the board opt for a change in the dugout.

Emery has come under scrutiny in recent weeks after some poor results which have left Arsenal fifth in the Premier League table, four points adrift of the top four.

After a big summer of spending on the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz, patience is wearing thin with Arsenal fans.

Emery's treatment of Mesut Ozil has also split the fan base, with some questioning his decision to exclude the World Cup winner entirely, given Arsenal's problems with creativity from midfield.

Whilst reports suggest Emery has the full backing o the Arsenal hierarchy as far as the German is concerned, there is growing pressure on his future at the club.

Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace: Unai Emery press conference in full

Should the club decided to wield the axe, Winterburn believes they should look no further than Vieira.

"I don't know if they would be as brave to go with someone like [Freddie] Ljungberg or [Mikel] Arteta," Winterburn told  Gambling.com.

"They may be terrific coaches but when you take that manager's role it steps up another couple of levels again.

"I would say keep an eye on what's happening with Patrick Viera.

"If someone like that could prove they are able to run a club in the right way, then Arsenal may look towards that eventually."

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has also been linked with the post, as well as Tottenham Hotspur.

The three-time Premier League winner was sacked by United in December 2018 and remains out of work, with reports stating he is holding out for another post in England to make history as the first manager to win a trophy with three different English clubs.
