The evidence Celtic dodged Christian Atsu bullet as Newcastle fans slate winger's FA Cup cameo

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu emerging as a deadline day option for Celtic raised a few eyebrows.

An injury to Mikey Johnston forced Neil Lennon to consider his options in wide areas following the departures of Scott Sinclair and Lewis Morgan.

With Mohamed Elyounoussi still on his way back, Celtic pondered a move for Atsu, who didn't appear to fit the Hoops mould, even on an almost emergency basis.

Regardless, the Ghanaian's preference was to remain on Tyneside and fight for a place in Steve Bruce's side.

He was handed an extra-time substitute's appearance in the 3-2 FA Cup win over League One Oxford United on Tuesday night.

But Atsu's display left Newcastle fans despairing.

Prior to Allan Saint-Maximin's eventual late thunderbolt, the 28-year-old passed up a golden chance.

He was picked out in acres of space in the box and, faced with getting a shot away or playing in DeAndre Yedlin, Atsu simply passed the ball out of play.

And here's just a flavour of the Twitter reaction.

@Kev_McKenna_ wrote: "How the f**k did Christian Atsu get himself a move to Chelsea

@johnpottm said: "Christian Atsu is the worst player Newcastle have had since ever."

@DanielGrayLFC said: "There's better players in the Northern league than Christian Atsu, he's awful"

@Sean_Douglass wrote: "DeAndre Yedlin and Christian Atsu give me, a 30-year-old with no real talent, hope that I can still become a professional footballer."

@DrogsNavan insisted: "The FA need to launch an inquiry into how Christian Atsu got a professional football contract."

@BallxrSturridge added: "Christian Atsu could just about be the worst footballer I have even seen in my life"

Some Celtic fans were critical of the club's decision not to add an extra winger on deadline day.

But the perils of the January market - especially in the latter stages - are clear and perhaps it's for the best the Premiership champions didn't bring in an extra body for the sake of it.
