The Everton decision which has sparked transfer rumours among Newcastle United fans

Newcastle United fans are speculating over a possible move for former transfer target Josh King following his release from Everton.

The Magpies have previously been linked with a move for the Norwegian international who is now a free agent following a forgettable stint at Goodison Park.

King was handed a short-term deal on Merseyside on deadline day in February, with former Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti raising the prospect of a longer contract for the 29-year-old.

However, the striker made just 11 substitute appearances for his new club, having scored three goals for relegated Bournemouth in the first-half of the campaign.

King is again on the lookout for a new club after Everton confirmed the forward would not be offered a new deal.

It was not too long ago that King was linked with a host of moves away from the Cherries, with former club Manchester United listed as a potential destination.

Newcastle considered a move for the striker alongside Callum Wilson last summer, before ultimately deciding to pursue a deal for the England international.

Steve Bruce has warned supporters the club are not in a position to spend 'millions and millions' of pounds this summer, with loans and free transfers considered the most likely deals.

It has led several fans on social media to speculate whether the Magpie will revisit a move for King now that he is a free agent.

One fan wrote: "Josh King would be [a] good backup for us, get it done."

Another supporter posted: "Josh King would be a better option than Gayle or Carroll considering we’ll be looking at frees."

A third fan commented: "Can't wait for #NUFC to have the Fraser, Wilson and Josh King up front."
