Scottish dramatist David Greig’s 2013 play The Events was written in response to the violence unleashed by white supremacist Anders Breivik in 2011. It looks at the compassion, rage and our compulsion to understand why people do the things they do.
Claire, played by Catherine McClements, is the vicar of a small seaside village. After a boy walked into her community choir rehearsal and shot several members dead, she’s eaten up with rage and the relentless question: what made him do it?
Two actors examine the vicar’s compulsion to understand the mass murder, while the choir gives voice to her anger, as she demands answers from friends, her lover and the killer himself. Greig’s exploration of the unthinkable events is directed by Clare Watson, and will see McClements joined by Sydney’s community choirs.
