The UK Civil Service's European Fast Stream is aimed at people who, ultimately, want to work for one of the European Union institutions and become an EU civil servant.
The EFS was established in 1991 to help increase the UK's presence in the EU and this two year graduate programme will provide you with experience and training designed to improve your chances of passing the EU's demanding selection process, known as the 'concours'.
As a European Fast Streamer you will be based in a UK government department with significant EU-related responsibilities, such as the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
In your department you will benefit from EU-related postings intended to give you insight into how the EU works. For example, you could be working in a role that influences policy on an EU-wide scale by helping to tackle climate change or combat terrorism or be personally involved in the EU's programme of aid to developing countries. You might assist the formulation of policy on sustainable energy or integrated transport or help to negotiate or implement EU directives.
You will also have the chance to undertake a five month placement in the European Commission (as long as you have not worked there before) and your training will include a foundation course that provides a comprehensive introduction and overview of the EU. You will also receive intensive coaching in French or German as you will be taking much of the 'concours' in one of these EU working languages.
