The essential guide to serums

Serums are where skincare tech really comes into play.

These are the athletes of your bathroom. But how to pick? There are endless options, all speaking the language of science, which can feel intimidating and, frankly, boring. I mean, isn’t life demanding enough? And so now spring is springing and skin needs a nudge towards summer serenity, I am going to tell you about three options that have real muscle. Remember, with these you are playing the long game. And it had better be the long game at these prices — blame it on the highly concentrated ingredients.

1. I love an expert. And Elixseri is the serum expert with its techy, potentised botanical approach. Its Skin Meditation (£100; selfridges.com) is a sensitive wellness cocktail that counteracts visible signs of stress and restores your glow.

2. Skinceuticals is my favourite brand for trustworthy products that truly perform. Its night Resveratrol B E Antioxidant Night Concentrate (£130; skinceuticals.co.uk) harnesses resveratrol — known as the longevity molecule — to pump skin full of antioxidant defence mechanisms, revealing radiance and firmness.

3. Murad Revitalixir Recovery Serum (£70; murad.co.uk) is a mixture of gel and spheres. The gel, stuffed with neuropeptides, caffeine and niacimide (to boost cellular turnover), is all about vibrancy, while the spheres deal with inflammation through cannabis oil (aahhhh) and hyaluronic acid. Altogether, efficiently reviving.

Technologically advanced serums are not sexy, it’s true. But, like complicated people, they can be powerful allies. If you can just get your head around them…
