The Equalizer franchise hints at a surprise fourth installment

Writer Richard Wenk hints at a possible fourth movie in The Equalizer franchise.

Last year, fans of The Equalizer franchise were led to believe that the third installment would mark the end of the series. However, a recent interview with writer Richard Wenk suggests that there may yet be a surprise fourth movie in the works. While Wenk initially felt that The Equalizer 3 provided closure for the story, he has now been tasked with exploring how the franchise can continue.

In his conversation with Empire Magazine, Wenk admitted, 'I felt it was over. It felt like the final chapter for this guy. I don’t know where he would go after that. Though...[laughs] I’m now tasked with figuring that out.' This statement comes as a surprise given the previous assertion that the third movie would be the last. However, considering the worldwide success of The Equalizer, which grossed an impressive $190 million at the box office, it seems that there is still momentum and interest for more.

Despite being given the responsibility of coming up with ideas for The Equalizer 4, Wenk confessed that he may need assistance in the process. He even jokingly suggested reaching out to Empire readers for suggestions: 'I may have to call you and ask you what you would like if you had to see another one.'

The Equalizer 3, released in September last year, followed the story of Robert McCall (played by Denzel Washington), a former government assassin seeking redemption for the dark deeds of his past. Settling in Southern Italy, McCall finds himself defending his new friends from local crime bosses, resulting in a thrilling battle against the mafia.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and penned by Richard Wenk, The Equalizer 3 showcased a stellar cast including Washington, Dakota Fanning, Andrea Scarduzio, David Denman, Sonia Ben Ammar, Remo Girone, and Eugenio Mastrandrea. It was hailed as a powerful conclusion to Washington's portrayal of the avenging angel McCall.

However, Fuqua himself has hinted at the possibility of a return, either in the form of a fourth movie featuring Washington or even a prequel exploring McCall's backstory. Fuqua mused, 'Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff… Is there a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person — the younger version.'

So, the question remains: would you like to see Denzel Washington reprise his role in The Equalizer 4, or do you believe that The Equalizer 3 provided the perfect send-off for the character? It seems that the future of the franchise is still uncertain, but fans can hold on to the hope that more thrilling adventures may await them in the world of The Equalizer.
