The Englishman who's on the radar of the Ospreys as they look to fill attack coach vacancy

Wasps’ Lee Blackett is believed to be on the radar of the Ospreys for the attack coach job at the Liberty Stadium.

The former wing and centre stepped up as interim head coach at Wasps recently after the departure of Dai Young.

It’s now emerged he’s among those who are interesting the Ospreys as they set about replacing the departing Matt Sherratt.

It is not clear if they have spoken to Blackett since his temporary upgrading at Wasps or indeed if his outlook has changed in recent weeks, with the 37-year-old leading the Coventry-based club to three straight wins since taking over from Young, the run including a 60-10 spanking of Saracens.

But he has been in the mix for the vacancy in Swansea and the assumption is that is still the case.

Others are also being assessed, although face-to-face interviews have been unable to take place over the past fortnight because of the coronavirus crisis.

The Ospreys insist the key issue is that they get the right man for the job, not how quickly they make the appointment, and they have been using technology to speak to potential candidates.

They are currently in the process of establishing a shortlist and are likely to want to formally, and traditionally, interview those who make the cut.

The expectation is the Welsh Rugby Union would like to see Dwayne Peel on such a list, with high-quality Welsh coaches increasingly seen as a rare breed in the regional game.

But while Peel was heavily linked with the head coach role at the Ospreys, which went to Toby Booth, he is under contract as attack boss at Ulster and it’s far from certain he could be persuaded to have a crack at a similar role at the Liberty.

But he is a coach the Ospreys are known to admire.

Sherratt is leaving for Worcester Warriors at the end of the season.
