The empty shelves in two of Wales' biggest supermarkets as stores run out of more food

The shelves of one of Cardiff's biggest supermarkets have been left completely empty as shoppers stockpile due to coronavirus fears.

While toilet roll, pasta and paracetamol were some of the first items to be stripped from the shelves - as the government encourage social distancing, supermarkets across Wales are looking increasingly bare.

With schools due to close this week and thousands working from home, shops have struggled to keep up with the level of stock being bought.

This has meant empty shelves, online delivery slots completely booked up and stores having to alter their opening hours to restock.

The situation has worsened since the prime minister urged customers to avoid any non essential contact.

A store which has felt the brunt of the panic buying and hoarding is one of Cardiff's biggest supermarkets - Asda, Leckwith.

Pictures taken on Thursday, March 19 show that the shelves had been completely ransacked of some staple items - including potatoes, meat, eggs and cereals.

One customer said that the store was much busier than usual for a weekday lunchtime.

"Although there were plenty of shelves that were well-stocked, others were empty. And different foods were now out of stock than had been running low from last weekend.

"There were no potatoes or onions, while several freezers were entirely empty and many others looked sparse. The meat aisle was almost empty, with no chicken at all.

"As had been the case in the same supermarket on the weekend, there was no pasta, rice or flour."

There were no eggs, while cereal boxes and biscuits shelves were almost empty.

The customer said that some shoppers wore face masks and said that staff had said that the mood had been tense at times, claiming to have seen a fight among customers.

It seems as though the Cardiff branch is not the only one to considerably busier with panicked shoppers.

A customer at Asda Llansamlet, Swansea, managed to get nearly all of their shopping done on Sunday - despite the increased footfall.

"I headed to Asda first thing on Sunday to try and beat the crowds and found everyone else doing the same.

"Having said that I managed to get my whole weekly shop done - only substituting a few items and the only thing there was none of was toilet paper.

"I've been to a few smaller shops this week that have all been well stocked with toilet roll and pasta and Lidl in Swansea has been much better stocked since the weekend.

"It seems that the bigger supermarkets just can't refill the aisles quick enough."
