The Emmerdale actor in the cast of Our Great Yorkshire Life on Channel 5 and his life off screen and Robert De Niro link

Emmerdale actor Dean Andrews has taken on a new role this evening, narrating the brand new Channel 5 programme Our Great Yorkshire Life.

Speaking to the Express, Dean said he took on the role thanks to his deep love for his home county, telling the media outlet: "I just think it's interesting to see places that you don't always get to see.

"And the people who have got everyday lives, but most of what they're doing is quite special."

Dean has had a turbulent time on Emmerdale with Will's daughter Dawn killing dodgy copper Malone and Will subsequently being involved in hiding the body.

Dean admitted that he was rejected by soap bosses earlier in his career and revealed it was for an embarrassing reason.

Dean is Yorkshire born and bred growing up in Barnsley but he was rejected from Emmerdale years ago because his Yorkshire accent wasn’t convincing enough.

He told This Morning: "“I started acting really late in life, probably around about 40.

“But when I was in my mid-to-late 30s a friend of mine, who was in Emmerdale, said I should write to the casting director and ask her to bring me in for an audition. Which I did and she did, the lovely Sue Jackson.

“I went in to play a Yorkshire radio presenter. I went in and did it in an American accent, for some unknown reason.

‘The director was really kind, he said ‘that was lovely, any chance you could do it in a Yorkshire accent?’ ‘I said, of course, as I am Mr Yorkshire.

“And, I then proceeded to do it again in the same American accent, and didn’t get the job.”

But while Dean says that he started acted late, he still has an impressive resume.

He starred in Channel 4 drama Buried, which won a BAFTA For best drama series, the ITV drama Wire in the Blood and was a lead in BBC's Marchlands.

He's also well known for Life on Mars and Last Tango in Halifax.

Dean also has an unlikely link to Hollywood legend Robert De Niro.

Managing to scoop an interview with the star, he shared how the experience happened on Loose Women.

Dean said: “It came about from a drunken night. I was with my wife and she said ‘you’ll never guess who is coming to Leeds?’ I asked who and she said Robert De Niro. She told me she was thinking of getting me the tickets for Christmas and gave me the literature.

“I read through it and it said there was a celebrity interviewer to be confirmed. I said ‘they haven’t got one’ and to ring them to say I’d do it. You know what it is like after a few Jack Daniels. I ended up interviewing him for two nights.”

Our Great Yorkshire Life continues on January 13, at 8pm on Channel 5.
