The Elf on the Shelf cheat sheet every parent needs this Christmas

It's almost that time of year again when the popular Elf on the Shelf tradition takes over people's homes.

As with many things, the craze began in the US back in 2005, starting out as a children's book telling the story of how Father Christmas sends a 'scout' elf to check whether children are being 'naughty or nice'.

But it soon spread to the UK and many parents here know only too well the pain of getting in bed at night and suddenly remembering they 'haven't moved the bl**dy elf'.

The book has an accompanying elf puppet for parents to recreate the story in their own homes.

Every day in the run-up to Christmas, once the kids are in bed, parents place the elf in different locations in the house so he pops up somewhere new when they wake up in the morning.

But what starts off as fun in the countdown to the big day can soon become a chore for mums and dads as they struggle to come up with new ways of bringing their elves to life.

That's why parents are loving this cheat sheet giving them a new idea for each day of December, right up to Christmas Day.

It starts on day one, with the elf arriving with a naughty or nice list with the child's name on.

And then lists a whole host of activities to keep the elf busy over advent, including leaving children a Christmas message made from candy, eating cheese in the fridge and even sitting in the car with his seatbelt on.

The list has been put together by Country Living and has already been widely shared on social media.

So now you have no excuse not to do it! Just don't blame us when you're having your first row over who should have moved Elfy last night.
